Marina Systems Freeze Protection

During low temperature spells, the Port of Edmonds implements various methods of freeze protection for water systems throughout our facilities. Some of the potable water systems have automatic freeze valves that open wider as the temperature drops lower and during very cold temperatures, water will be running full force to prevent damage to the pipes. Other areas of the marina do not have these systems and Port staff may disconnect hoses and turn the water at the end of the dock on.

If temperatures are predicted to be very low for extended periods of time, the pipes in some locations will be completely blown out and shut down to avoid damage. Boatyard water and dry storage wash down area pipes have been blown out and water has been shut down to these two locations. Port staff will usually post signage on dock gates explaining that freeze protection is in place or water has been shut off. So when you see a running faucet during freezing temperatures, don’t shut it off. Also, during the winter time, it is a good practice to disconnect your hose from the faucet when it is not being used. Check with the marina office if you have questions.
